Claim help

A claim, step by step — and help when it stalls.

Claims go best when the insurer is told early and the documents are right the first time. Choose your policy for the steps and papers, and ask for help if you are stuck.

Health

What to do

  1. Planned admission (cashless)Ask the hospital’s insurance desk to send a pre-authorisation request to your insurer before admission, with your policy number and photo ID.
  2. Emergency admissionInform the insurer or its claims administrator as soon as you can, within the time the policy states.
  3. ReimbursementAt a hospital outside the network, pay the bill, then claim within the deadline in your policy, with the bills and reports.
  4. Cashless timelinesIRDAI has prescribed one hour for a cashless pre-authorisation decision and three hours for final authorisation at discharge. These govern processing; they do not promise that a claim will be accepted.

Documents usually asked for

  • Signed claim form
  • Policy number and photo ID
  • Discharge summary
  • Final hospital bill with an itemised break-up
  • Investigation reports and prescriptions
  • Pharmacy bills
  • Bank details, for a reimbursement

Motor

What to do

  1. At the sceneMake it safe, photograph the damage and the surroundings, and note the other vehicle’s details. Do not agree at the roadside what anyone will pay.
  2. Tell the insurerReport the claim before the vehicle is moved for repair wherever you can, and take a claim number.
  3. Police, where neededFor theft, injury or damage to someone else’s property, report it to the police promptly.
  4. Survey and repairThe insurer’s surveyor assesses the damage; at a network garage the approved amount is settled directly with the garage.

Documents usually asked for

  • Claim form
  • Registration certificate
  • The driver’s licence
  • Policy document
  • Police report, for theft or injury
  • Repair estimate and final bills

Your insurer’s claim line

A claim is made to the insurer, so these are their own numbers and pages, read from each insurer’s website. Listed alphabetically.

Read from each insurer’s own website on 11 October 2026. Insurers change numbers and pages; their website has the final word.

If a claim is refused or cut

  1. Ask for the reasons in writingThe insurer must give its reasons. Read them against your policy wording.
  2. Complain to the insurerWrite to its grievance redressal officer and keep the reference number.
  3. Escalate to IRDAIIf the insurer does not resolve it, register the complaint on IRDAI’s Bima Bharosa portal.
  4. The Insurance OmbudsmanFree to use, within the limits and time the Ombudsman rules allow.
