Motor insurance · Two-wheeler

Bike and scooter cover, without fine-print surprises.

Two-wheeler insurance works like car insurance at a smaller scale. The rules that catch people out are the long-term third-party cover on a new vehicle and letting a renewal lapse.

Reviewed

In short

  • A new two-wheeler carries five years of third-party cover from registration.
  • Own-damage cover can be bought a year at a time alongside it.
  • Riding without valid insurance is an offence and leaves you personally liable.

Third-party and own damage

Third-party liability is compulsory and pays for injury or damage you cause to others. Own-damage cover pays for accidental damage, fire, flood and theft of your own vehicle, settled against its insured declared value less depreciation and deductibles.

Add-ons that suit two-wheelers

Zero depreciation for newer vehicles, roadside assistance for longer rides, and engine protection where streets flood in the monsoon. Personal accident cover for a pillion rider is an optional add-on.

What to check

These decide whether cover is real when you claim. Read them before the premium.

Renew before expiry

There is no grace period: cover ends on the expiry date. After a lapse an inspection is usually needed, and the no-claim bonus is lost after 90 days.

The IDV

Check it at every renewal; it decides a theft or total-loss settlement.

Documents

A valid licence, the registration certificate and a current pollution certificate.

Garages near you

Cashless repair works only at the insurer’s network garages.

Questions people ask

General guidance. Your policy wording decides the specifics.

Is third-party cover enough for an old scooter?

It meets the law and pays for harm you cause others. On an old vehicle worth little, own-damage cover may not earn its premium; on a new one it usually does.

What do I need for a theft claim?

The registration certificate, both keys, the police complaint and, later, the police’s report that the vehicle is untraced. The insurer pays the IDV less the deductible.

What happens to the insurance when I sell my bike?

The policy should be transferred to the buyer within 14 days. Your no-claim bonus stays with you for your next vehicle.

Insurance is the subject matter of solicitation. Benefits depend on the policy terms and the insurer’s decision; read the policy wording before buying.
