Health insurance · Parents and senior citizens

Cover for your parents, chosen with their health in mind.

Health insurance after sixty is available and worth having, but it is priced and underwritten differently. What matters most is the co-payment, the waiting periods for existing conditions and the hospitals your parents would actually use.

In short

  • There is no upper age limit for buying health insurance: insurers must offer products to every age group.
  • Expect a medical assessment, a higher premium and often a co-payment on each claim.
  • A disclosed pre-existing disease is covered after a waiting period of no more than 36 months.
  • Nearly one in five people who give their age when enquiring with Beema1 is sixty or over (Beema1 records, October 2026).

What is different after sixty

Insurers assess health more closely, often with a check-up before the policy is issued. Premiums are higher and rise with age. Many senior citizen policies carry a co-payment — a fixed share of each admissible claim that you pay — and some cap room rent or particular treatments.

Some products are designed for senior citizens; others are regular products open to older applicants. Compare what each pays for the conditions your parents already have.

Diabetes, blood pressure and other existing conditions

Disclose them accurately on the proposal form. Under the 2024 regulations the waiting period for a disclosed pre-existing disease cannot exceed 36 months of continuous cover, and some products offer shorter periods for a higher premium. Non-disclosure is the commonest reason a claim is refused.

Tax relief for your parents’ cover

Premiums you pay for your parents’ health insurance can qualify for a deduction under the old tax regime, with a higher limit when they are senior citizens. The new regime does not allow it. Tax rules change, so check the current limits before relying on them.

Talk to us about health cover

A starting range for a conversation, not a recommendation, worked out from where you would be treated, who is covered and their ages. About half of the families buying health cover through Beema1 choose between ₹10 lakh and ₹25 lakh. The right cover depends on your health, budget and the insurer’s terms.

What to check

These decide whether cover is real when you claim. Read them before the premium.

Co-payment

The share of each admissible claim you pay. On a ₹2,00,000 admissible claim, a 20% co-payment would be ₹40,000, before any other deduction. This is an illustration, not a quotation.

Waiting periods

Check the period for each existing condition, for specified treatments such as cataract or joint replacement, and whether any can be shortened.

Room rent and disease limits

Caps on the room category or on treatments common in later life can reduce what is paid even when the sum insured is not used up.

The pre-policy check-up

Ask who pays for it and what happens if it finds something new.

Hospitals near them

Cashless treatment depends on the hospital being in the insurer’s network. Check the hospitals close to your parents.

Renewal

Renewal cannot be refused merely because claims were made in earlier years. Confirm the policy’s renewal terms in writing.

Questions people ask

General guidance. Your policy wording decides the specifics.

Is there an age limit for buying health insurance?

Not any more. Insurers are required to offer health products to all age groups, including senior citizens. Acceptance, medical tests, premium and conditions still depend on each insurer’s underwriting.

Should parents be on our family floater or on their own policy?

Usually their own. A floater is priced on its oldest member, so including parents can raise the premium for the whole family, and a large claim for one parent reduces the cover left for everybody else.

Will my father’s diabetes be covered?

It can be, after the waiting period for pre-existing diseases — no more than 36 months of continuous cover under the 2024 regulations — provided it is disclosed. Some policies cover it sooner for a higher premium.

What is a co-payment, and can I avoid it?

It is the share of each admissible claim you pay. Some policies let you remove or reduce it for a higher premium; others make it mandatory above a certain entry age.

Can an existing policy be moved to a senior citizen plan?

Portability carries eligible waiting-period credits to a new insurer, subject to its underwriting. Apply 30 to 60 days before renewal.

Insurance is the subject matter of solicitation. Benefits depend on the policy terms and the insurer’s decision; read the policy wording before buying.
