Health insurance · Top-up and super top-up
More health cover, without paying for it twice.
A top-up adds a second layer of cover that starts once a set amount — the deductible — has been met. It is one of the least expensive ways to raise your total cover, especially alongside an employer’s policy.

In short
- You choose a deductible, often equal to the cover you already hold.
- A top-up looks at each claim on its own; a super top-up adds up the year’s claims.
- Because the insurer pays only above the deductible, the premium is far lower than for the same base cover.
Top-up or super top-up
A top-up pays when a single claim is larger than the deductible: two separate ₹3 lakh admissions against a ₹5 lakh deductible would get nothing from it.
A super top-up adds the year’s claims together. Once their total passes ₹5 lakh, it pays the rest, up to its own sum insured. That is usually the more useful of the two.
Where it fits
Alongside an employer’s group policy, which ends when the job does; on top of a modest base policy, to cover a serious illness; or for a family whose floater could be used up in one bad year.
You do not need a base policy from the same insurer, but the deductible applies either way: without other cover, you pay it yourself.

A super top-up can add the upper part of this range for less than a larger base policy.
Parents over sixty are usually better on a policy of their own.

About half of the families buying health cover through Beema1 choose between ₹10 lakh and ₹25 lakh. The right cover depends on your health, budget and the insurer’s terms.
What to check
These decide whether cover is real when you claim. Read them before the premium.
The deductible
Choose one your existing cover, or your savings, can actually meet. A deductible larger than your base cover leaves a gap you pay.
Per claim or per year
Confirm whether it is a top-up (each claim) or a super top-up (the year’s total). The names are sometimes used loosely.
Its own waiting periods
A top-up’s waiting periods start when it starts, not when your base policy did.
Room rent and sub-limits
If the top-up has tighter limits than your base policy, the same admission can be paid differently by the two.
Claiming from two insurers
With different insurers you usually claim from the base insurer first, then from the top-up with the first settlement’s documents.
Questions people ask
General guidance. Your policy wording decides the specifics.
Do I need a base policy to buy a super top-up?
No, but the deductible still applies. Without other cover you pay that amount yourself before the super top-up pays anything.
Can I use a super top-up with my employer’s group cover?
Yes. A deductible close to the group sum insured is a common way to add cover cheaply — remembering that group cover ends when the job does.
Is a super top-up worth it for senior citizens?
It can add depth for less than a larger base policy, but check entry ages, co-payments and the waiting periods for existing conditions first.
Does a top-up cover pre-existing diseases?
After its own waiting period, if disclosed. The clock starts with the top-up itself.
