Let’s talk
Individual, family floater and senior citizen

Hospital bills should not decide your treatment.

Cover for your family across a wide cashless hospital network, chosen with an advisor who explains the exclusions before you buy, not after.

What health insurance can cover

The benefits, and the condition attached to each. Your policy wording is what finally decides.

Hospitalisation

Room, nursing, surgeon and treatment costs for an admission.

Within the sum insured, and subject to any room category limit the policy states.

Pre and post hospitalisation

Consultations, tests and medicines connected with a covered admission.

For the number of days before and after that the policy specifies.

Day-care procedures

Treatments that no longer need a full day in hospital.

Only the procedures the policy lists; a general exclusion still applies.

Cashless treatment

The insurer settles approved amounts with the hospital directly.

At hospitals in that insurer's network, and after the insurer authorises it.

Ambulance

Road ambulance to hospital.

Up to the amount per event the policy states.

AYUSH treatment

Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy inpatient treatment.

At qualifying institutions, and subject to the policy's conditions.

Home treatment

Treatment at home where admission was advised but unavailable.

Only where the policy provides it, on a doctor's recommendation.

Optional benefits

Maternity, critical illness, OPD and restoration, where offered.

Each is a separate add-on with its own waiting period and premium.

Worth adding

Restore benefit

The sum insured is reinstated if it is exhausted during the year.

Maternity cover

Delivery and newborn cover after the waiting period.

Critical illness

A lump sum on diagnosis of a listed condition.

OPD cover

Consultations and diagnostics without admission.

What to check before you choose

These decide whether cover is real when you claim. Read them before the premium.

Waiting periods

Cover for some conditions begins later than the policy does. Under the 2024 regulations a disclosed pre-existing disease waiting period cannot exceed 36 months of continuous cover, and a product may offer shorter. Specified illnesses and maternity carry their own periods.

Exclusions

Every policy excludes something. Read the permanent exclusions and the first-year exclusions before you buy, not at claim time.

Co-payment

A stated share of an admissible claim that you pay. On a ₹1,00,000 admissible claim a 10% co-payment would be ₹10,000, before any other deduction. This is an illustration, not a quotation.

Deductible

An amount that must be met before the cover responds. Check whether it applies per claim or across the policy year.

Room eligibility

Many policies tie the room category to the sum insured. Choosing a dearer room can reduce every associated charge proportionately, not just the room rent.

Sub-limits

Caps on particular treatments or charges, which apply even when the sum insured is not exhausted.

Restoration

Replenishes the sum insured under stated conditions. Check what triggers it, how often it applies, and whether it covers the same illness again.

Hospital network

Cashless depends on the hospital being in that insurer's network. Check the hospitals you would actually use before choosing.

How Beema1 supports you

What we do at each stage. The claim decision itself rests with the insurer.

  1. Understand what you needA conversation about who is to be covered, the hospitals you would use and what you can afford.
  2. Explain the optionsThe realistic choices, what each excludes, and where they differ beyond the premium.
  3. Help with the applicationA document checklist and help completing the proposal, including what must be disclosed.
  4. Explain the policy you receivedGoing through the policy wording and Customer Information Sheet so you know what you hold.
  5. Renewal and claim guidanceA review before renewal, and help understanding the claim process and whom to contact. The claim decision rests with the insurer.

If you need to claim

  1. Tell usCall your advisor, or the number on your policy.
  2. We register itWe help you notify the insurer and understand the documents requested.
  3. AssessmentThe insurer reviews the claim and may request documents. Timing depends on the claim and applicable requirements.
  4. SettlementPayment depends on the policy terms and the insurer’s decision. Ask about the cashless or reimbursement process that applies.

How to choose, and what to check

Four things worth more than the premium figure.

01

Claim settlement ratio

Read the insurer’s report and check the reporting period, calculation basis and limitations. A ratio based on the number of claims differs from one based on claim amounts. Neither guarantees that an individual claim will be approved.

02

How long settlement takes

A claim paid slowly is paid while you are out of pocket. Ask for the average turnaround, not the best case, and ask what happens when a document is queried.

03

What is excluded

Every policy excludes something, and the exclusions decide whether cover is real. Waiting periods, sub-limits and room-rent caps matter more than the headline sum insured. Read these before you buy; nobody enjoys reading them at claim time.

04

Who helps when it goes wrong

The difference between a policy and a promise is who answers the telephone on the day of a claim. Ask that question before you pay, of us and of anyone else.

Health Insurance questions, answered clearly

General guidance. Your own policy wording and Customer Information Sheet decide the specifics.

Choosing cover

Individual cover or a family floater?

Individual cover gives each insured person their own sum insured. A floater shares one sum insured across the covered family and often costs less. Weigh the members' ages and the chance of more than one claim in a year.

How much cover should I consider?

Think about the hospitals you would use, how many people are insured, any cover you already have through an employer, and what you could pay yourself. There is no single right figure.

Can senior citizens be covered?

Insurers are required to offer products across age groups. Eligibility, medical assessment, premium and conditions depend on the product and the insurer's underwriting, so acceptance is not automatic.

Can I apply with diabetes or hypertension?

Often yes, but disclose it accurately. Acceptance, premium loading and waiting periods depend on the insurer's assessment. An existing condition is not usually covered from day one.

Does an employer policy make a personal one unnecessary?

Employer cover usually ends with the job and may not suit your family's needs. Many people hold a personal policy alongside it so cover does not lapse when work changes.

Benefits and limits

What is a waiting period?

A period during which stated conditions or treatments are not covered. For disclosed pre-existing diseases the 2024 regulations cap it at 36 months of continuous cover; products may offer shorter. Check the wording for the exact terms.

What is the difference between a co-payment and a deductible?

A co-payment is a share of an admissible claim that you pay. A deductible is an amount met before the cover responds. Check whether a deductible applies per claim or per year.

Does restoration mean unlimited cover?

No. It replenishes the sum insured under stated conditions. The trigger, the number of restorations and whether it applies to the same illness vary, and limits on a single claim still apply.

Are outpatient visits and medicines covered?

Only where the product or an add-on provides it. Do not assume routine consultations and medicines are included because hospitalisation is.

Is mental health treatment covered?

Insurers must make products available in line with the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017. The benefits, treatment settings and conditions still depend on the policy, so check the wording.

Are AYUSH treatments covered?

The regulatory framework provides for AYUSH cover. Which treatments, providers and expenses qualify remains subject to the policy.

What is a room rent limit?

A cap on the room category or daily rent. Exceeding it can reduce other associated charges proportionately, so the effect is larger than the room cost alone.

Claims

Does cashless mean I pay nothing?

Not necessarily. Cashless concerns payment of approved amounts. Co-payments, deductibles, excluded items and anything above a limit may still be yours to pay.

How quickly must cashless be authorised?

IRDAI has prescribed one hour for cashless pre-authorisation and three hours for final authorisation. These govern the insurer's processing of the request; they are not a promise that a claim will be accepted or that discharge happens within that time.

What if treatment is at a hospital outside the network?

You would usually pay and claim reimbursement afterwards. Keep the discharge summary, bills and prescriptions; the insurer will list what it needs.

Where do I take an unresolved complaint?

Start with the insurer's grievance process and keep the reference number. IRDAI's Bima Bharosa system lets you register and track an insurance grievance, and the Insurance Ombudsman may be available depending on eligibility.

Renewal and your rights

Can I cancel after reading the documents?

Eligible new health policies of at least a year carry a 30-day free-look period from receipt of the document. Cancellation and any refund are subject to the stated conditions and permitted deductions.

Can I move to another insurer without losing credits?

Portability can carry eligible accumulated credits across, subject to process and underwriting. Apply 30 to 60 days before renewal; later requests may be considered but should not be assumed.

What is the five-year moratorium?

After 60 continuous months, including credits carried by portability or migration, a policy or claim cannot be contested for non-disclosure or misrepresentation except for established fraud. It does not make excluded treatment payable or remove limits, and increased cover starts its own clock.

Can renewal be refused because I claimed?

For the applicable health policies, renewal cannot be refused merely because claims were made in earlier years. Certain benefit policies that end once the benefit is paid are an exception.
